I was nearly busted by my wife today

I keep my Archos 160GB DVR plugged into a video feed from the video camera in the bedroom upstairs, next to my PC downstairs.

Normally the audio is muted, but I turned the volume up to FULL to watch some pre-recorded footage earlier today.

Later on, I was in the bedroom getting changed leaving my wife downstairs watching TV, when she came running up the stairs to the bedroom saying there were noises and breathing coming from the PC. I asked her if she had broke the PC, and she said she hadn't touched it at all

I then realised what had happened, she was hearing me on the audio feed from the bedroom

Quickly I tried to think of an excuse.. on the desk above the PC there was my voice recorder.. quickly I picked it up and recorded the background noise when a few seconds later she walked in the room.
I played back the few seconds I had recorded... "Oh it was your voice recorder.. it gave me such a scare, strange breathing noises coming from around the PC.. I didn't know what it was!!!!!"

Phew, I got away with it but only just.


Anybody else with tales of being nearly busted?, with cool excuses of course.

YES. I had a bathroom cam set up. This was back in the day when I was recording it on VCR. What I didn't realize at the time, was that you should leave a little space at the beginning. I just recorded from the start. I then used the same videotape later to record a show. I normally destroy my tapes but was in a rush and grabbed the wrong one. I recorded over the tape, but the very beginning (3 secs) didn't get re-recorded. So, the wife and I start to watch, and it's of our bathroom. She's like...what the hell? And, I said...oh...uh...I recorded the house for insurance purposes. I'm not sure she believed me, but...

haha. quick thinking.

Since setting up the wvc54gca cam in my living room, I've bad it setup to start recording every night around 9:30pm for a few hours. Sometimes I'm sitting around watching TV with my wife, sometimes I just head upstairs to watch a ballgame or something else (while she watches some of those ridiculous reality shows) and then I head off to bed early as I typically have to get up early for work.

Meanwhile I'll watch her through the video feed using my iphone and, sometimes catch her playing with herself a bit if she's up after I've supposedly gone to bed. Most times I'm up late enough to catch her, but other times I doze off. Not to fear because I have the recorded video which I can watch the next day to see what she's done.

A couple of times, while working from home, I've been sitting in my office fast forwarding through the recording of her when she's walked in. My office is setup so that the desk is facing the door and the laptops (yes plural) are facing me not visible to the door. But a couple of times she's walked in while the video was up, headed right around the desk to reach over and grab an envelope or extra pen or something. I quickly closed the laptop and started grumbling something about it crashing... meanwhile pulling the power chord out and removing the battery (so it was absolutely turned off). Luckily, as an IT guy, she doesn't give a second thought to my taking computers apart. Even when she does ask what happened, I can usually go off into a quick diatribe about Windows dumping off into a Blue Screen of Death and locking up right in the middle of a function call I was making in this script that I'm working on... blah blah blah. She tunes that out quick and leaves.

I've still got mountains of VHS tapes to "destroy" anyone of them would blow my cover, but there is no working video player connected now, phew
What are yoiu recording on now docref? (if you don't mind me asking)

Here's hoping the tip works! I'm now recording directly to my computer...although I haven't had anyone visit in order to use it!!! I hook the wireless receiver right up to the TV IN on the vid card. There was also a program called SupervisorCam that allowed motion detection. So, I could set the two of them up to work together.

The closest I got to getting busted was probably when a male friend noticed that my clock camera had motion detector sensors in front, and asked me what the hell they were good for. I quickly thought of an excuse that I wasn't sure, but thought they were to save power whenever no one is using the toilet.

Those out there who still use tape to store their hard-won footage pay good heed to Docref’s advice above.

Ten years ago I made the cardinal error of using one of my voyeur tapes to record my daughter’s second birthday party.

Believe me there is no hole big enough to crawl into when after sitting with your better half for twenty minutes ooohing! and aaahing! over your little angel’s party antics when the picture of her little face fades out to be replaced on screen by a blurry image of your wife’s sister wrapped in a towel!

None of the great excuses given above would have saved me – sorry to be off-topic but, I was not ‘nearly busted’, I was well and truly busted!
