I have MPC, and it let me do thumbnails for a few of my posts, but now it keeps telling me "cannot create thumbnails out of 16 bpp dibs file". Any ideas? It has said that for older clips and new ones.

    Default Another option...

I have tried MPC but still prefer jetAudio for video files http://www.cowonamerica.com/products/jetaudio/. Don't let the name put you off, I guess it has evolved from an audio player (although for audio I haven't found anything better than Winamp). jA has a button for screen grabs at the bottom of the video window that opens the usual "save as" dialog.

I got tired of having to choose a frame to capture so I've been using Image Grabber II http://www.videohelp.com/tools/ImageGrabber It's small, easy and really quick to use.
Apparently you need .NET Framework to run IG II. If you don't have it already you can get it here http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/net.../aa731542.aspx

For those of you who have gotten consent error messages when making screen caps with Media Player Classic try this fix. Under the options window navigate to the Output section and choose any of the options under DirectShow Video other than "Overlay Mixer". You will notice the note at the bottom of the screen pointing out that "overlay mixer' prevents the saving of images.

Adding to my above post: If you use Media Player Classic for REalMedia and Quicktime files you may also want to check their settings on the Output page also.

you can also do screen caps in virtual dub by simply go to the file and save image sequence..if you want to choose which part of the vid to be scan just go to the frame scale then pause goto the edit then set the selection start and set the selection end, after that the image will automatically save in your computer

There is an old school way to get a screen cap, but it's not always the best quality - use the Print Screen (or Prt Scr) key on the keyboard..it's up by the Function buttons.

Open the video in your viewer, then pause it when you find something you think will make a good still photo. Hold down one of the Shift keys, then hit the Prt Scr key. This in effect takes a snapshot of what's on your computer screen. The pic can then be pasted into a photo-editing program, cropped to remove all the extra crap and saved as a jpg. (You can go even more old school and open it in the Paint program...but that'll save as a bmp.) Try running your viewer full-screen first...if the quality is too pixellated, go smaller for your pic.

the key isn't used much any more, cuz there are programs out there which do essentially the same thing with more bells and whistles.

I've been doing it for my posts...not great, but better than nothing.

    Lightbulb Windows Movie Maker

Windows Movie Maker will make vidcaps too, just select the frame and push the "camera" button, then save your jpg
